Mother: Beneath the surface

Photographs suggest a myriad of things. It is fascinating to me that without context this image may merely be seen as a child breastfeeding. What we cannot see - without context that is - is the struggle, the chaos, the tears and pleads happening in a different frame but nevertheless the same moment in time.

“Mother: Beneath the surface" is an ongoing body of work investigating the complex realities often hidden and masked in our day to day life as mothers. It explores the struggle and isolation that are undoubtedly felt by so many women raising and nurturing children in today's climate.

With a special focus on immigrant mothers and the effect of raising children away from familiar places, their roots and support systems within their broader family unit and community this series moves as a communal, collaborative piece to open a conversation around the mental and physical load of mothers today.

It is an invitation to freely express, to acknowledge, learn and hopefully create change through signalling to mothers the beauty and power of sharing what's 'beneath the surface' - for the individual as well as the collective.
